Because most of my coverage of the GPU market now focuses less on gaming and more on graphics-makers' high-performance computing (HPC) plans, I'll quickly run through the highlights of the consumer side of the new lineup before talking about AMD's Accelerated Computing Software Stack. The HD 2000 series also carries the dual burden of being a GPU and a platform for AMD's "stream computing" ambitions, a fact that makes the software side of the HD 2000 quite interesting and worth spending some time on. As the first DirectX 10-compatible GPU from AMD/ATI, the HD 2000 series has a lot riding on it, and to meet the challenge it boasts a design that's substantially different than what came before. The R600, as the top end of the HD 2000 series was codenamed, is the first major new product launched after the AMD/ATI merger, and it is to the ATI side of the company what the quad-core Barcelona will be to the AMD side, i.e., a make-or-break, next-generation architecture that debuts in a very competitive market where a major rival already has a strong head start with a similar product. Today, AMD launched its much-delayed HD 2000 series of GPU products, all of which are based on the same unified shader architecture that powers the Xbox 360.
